Automatic Identification of Criminal Networks

Common approach

Most analysts who are involved in identifying such networks start from a known individual (a node) and then discovers his/her links to other criminals.

There is an inherent problem with this approach in that the topology of networks will be dependent on the start point (the target person). From a set of fused data, there will be a number of criminal networks that may be identified.

Questions then arise; "How many relevant criminal networks are currently operating?" and "Which of the criminal networks need targeting first?"

Our approach

We have developed a solution for the analysis of criminal networks by developing a set of algorithms that automatically interrogate a data set to answer both of those questions.

Identify the capabilities of Crime Scene Investigators

We help supervisors to ensure that Crime Scene Investigators are utilised in an effective and efficient way, taking into account that personnel are the most expensive resource of any Force. Our solution enables to model the capabilities of each investigator in the recovery of forensic samples and the subsequent transferal into identifications. It can also identify those Investigators who may be capable of being mentors, those who require additional training and those who are/are not meeting any performance targets.

Predict crime scenes most likely to yield forensic samples

Most Police Forces have a finite number of Crime Scene Investigators and an ever increasing demand to attend crime scenes. This, at times, results in more scenes to examine than there are Investigators thereby posing the question, "Which scenes should be attended first in order to retrieve forensics?".

We have developed a business process which models the data to provide a prediction that is in excess of 60% accurate which is significantly better than human experts.

Combine, clean and match data to improve the accuracy of Home Office returns

Currently, there is a great variation in the way in which Forces provide information to the Home Office and prepare for audits as it is time consuming and resource intensive.

Our solution allows business processes to be individually tailored to facilitate the provision of the data and information that is required to fulfil these requirements.

Combine, clean and match data to provide automated and repeatable analysis

Depending on the Force requirements, performance indicators can be delivered weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually. Many systems have automated reports specifically configured to deliver such information, however, these are not always easy to manipulate when the Force's requirements alter.

Generally an analyst will extract data from relevant systems and semi manually clean, match and configure the data prior to conducting the required analysis. This time consuming procedure is repeated for each set of analytics.

Our business processes have been individually configured with analysts to automatically connect to the data sources, manipulate the data and produce the results at the click of a button. Once established they are repeatable and accurate.
